R&R 101: Deconstructing The Menu and 2023

The Rum & Regret team start off the new year by reviewing The Menu on HBO & talking about what movies, shows & video games we’re looking forward to in 2023.

Annie’s Review of the Menu:

The Menu First of all, this was a dark comedy disguised in a perfect horror thriller package. Which course was your favorite? Performances! Performances! Performances! In order…

1.    Ralph Fucking Fiennes (no one else for this he was exquisitely cast)
2.    Nicholas Hoult (excellent asshat foodie douche) Sniffing the air and terrified he offense while clearly only able to center himself taking pics and cussing at his “date.” The wild eyed ego so frail was played well and oh so creepy.
3.    Hong Chau as Elsa (low key the scariest as she got to interact so intimately with the “customers” (victims? I mean by the death so many were welcoming and willing… interesting)
4.    Anya Taylor Joy does it again (plus with that dress with those big eyes) Despite Chef trying to force her choice as to where she stood (us/them) she didn’t belong anywhere on the menu since she knew all sides as she plays roles for a living as an escort and he saw that/released her. So subtle and perfectly done. The literal fire in her eyes as her appetite piqued and she enjoyed her burger at the end! Loved it.  5.    Can’t forget Judith Light (Who is the Boss, anyway?) For me, she is matching only Jean Smart in their glorious TV intensity these days.

Loved that I got to break into laughter after wincing so seamlessly. I think it was Tyler’s Bullshit for me as a favorite course. Adam McKay does it again!
